Who are you ?
Michael Schacht, an ambient composer from Frankfurt, Germany, creates introspective sound worlds under his main project Metric System 1981 and his moniker Fumana. His music blends minimalism, nostalgia, and tranquility—offering listeners a space to pause, breathe, and drift.
How did you get into music? What is your musical background?
Back in the 1980s, Michael emerged from the heart of the cassette underground, releasing Berlin School-inspired electronic music recorded entirely on analog gear—Fostex tape decks, a beloved Korg MS-20 and MS-50, an SQ-10 sequencer, and the iconic vocoder. A handful of these rare tapes even found their way into the legendary Berlin shop run by the enigmatic figure known as « Der wahre Heino. »
How did your ambient project begin ?
After a long hiatus, Michael reignited his creative spark in 2020.
Where does the name/pseudonym of your music project come from?
The inspiration gave the fantastic « Fumana » all-analog Eurorack module featuring 16-band filter banks, allowing for complex spectral manipulation.
How did you get into ambient music? What did you like about this style of music?
My everlasting love since the eighties for Ambient Music as listener, channeling the atmospheric spirit of Harold Budd and Brian Eno into a new era of lush, ambient expression.
Does ambient music accompany you in your everyday life? What role does it play?
Overtime my needs to music became more and more quite and Ambient Music is my perfect partner that leads me through the day.
What tools do you use to compose music?
Technicalwise my work is based on three pillars in the following ranking: Eurorack System, DAW and Hardware Synths/Pedals.
What is your view of today’s independent music scene?
A very friendly, close cimmunity that is always up for a nice collaboraton, more like a family than an industry.
What’s new with you, and what are your upcoming projects?
Looking forward to the coming « Eclipse » EP featuring a beautiful rework by Belle Brume and hoping to find together with Le Code this year for a nice in spired project.
