Brannan Lane
intro
Who are you ?
I’m an American composer and ambient artist from Tennessee. My music is inspired by the various landscapes of the mountains, the ocean, space travel, people, etc. I use mainly field recordings and synthesizers to create gentle textures and spacious tones. I try to create a 3-D sound voyage for the listener.
How did you get into music? What is your musical background?
I’m from a family of musicians. I’m the youngest. I’ve made a living playing the drums for various artist for 40 plus years. The best gig I ever had was playing on the Grand Ole Opry in Nashville from 1987 to 2000. Then I lived in Austin, Texas for a few years. If you go to my Facebook page and scroll down, you can see some videos of me playing with different artists from Austin. Big shows, small shows, etc. https://www.facebook.com/brannan.lane/ I started getting into ambient, new age and world music around 1995 by listening to radio shows.
How did your ambient project begin ?
I started with the sea in the middle of the earth known as the Mediterranean. Mare Nostrum. I wanted to create an oceanic feel using swells and warm tones. The Mediterranean is largely enclosed and its high salinity, combined with a nutrient-poor ecosystem, leads to stunningly clear water rather than murky, high-nutrient water. The water is warm, and the air is filled with soothing negative ions from the sea spray, which can improve mood and well-being.
Where does the name/pseudonym of your music project come from?
This is my name, not a pseudonym. 🙂
Does ambient music accompany you in your everyday life? What role does it play?
Yes, I listen daily to ambient music. I enjoy all kinds of music. I’m always listening to something.
What tools do you use to compose music?
I like to record to a digital hardware and then move it to some software on my PC for editing and mixing. I use mostly Yamaha synthesizers.
What is your view of today’s independent music scene?
I don’t have a clue to what is going on. I’m an old guy, so I remember before there was the internet in every home. What?? Before YouTube or Spotify. I think it may be easier now than when I first started, because of the internet. The internet changed independent record labels. It gave us a better chance to be seen and heard just like the major music labels (UMG, SME and WMG).
What’s new with you, and what are your upcoming projects?
I’m currently working on new music for a few different people. I have releases coming out this year with Lauge, Applefish, Silvia Blaser, v e n n, plus some solo works. It’s going to be a busy year. I feel lucky.
